Copyright Lawyer Urges Artists to Respect Intellectual Property

Copyright lawyer ACP Joan M.S. Bull Esq. has issued a strong advisory to Sierra Leone’s creative industry, emphasizing the critical need for artists to respect intellectual property rights and understand the legal safeguards surrounding their work.

In a recent appeal, Bull underscored that every song, performance, and recording represents the hard work, investment, and time of its creator. While noting that the 2011 Copyright Act allows for inspiration and the use of common musical styles, she warned that artists must distinguish between creative influence and unauthorized infringement.

“The legal question is not simply: ‘Does this song sound similar to another song?’ The question is: ‘Has a person taken a protected part of another person’s creative work without authorization?’” Bull explained.

The advisory serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating these laws. Copyright infringement can lead to serious criminal penalties, including fines and potential imprisonment, as well as civil lawsuits for damages.

To protect themselves and their peers, Bull encouraged creatives to adopt practical safeguards, such as:

  • Seeking formal permission before using someone else's work.

  • Drafting clear agreements with collaborators.

  • Keeping thorough records of their own creative processes.

Bull concluded by calling for a shift in the local industry—moving away from public accusations and toward a culture of awareness, collaboration, and mutual respect for intellectual property.
