The fight for Sierra Leone Premier League survival took another dramatic turn as bottom-placed Diamond Stars Football Club were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Freetown City FC at the Koidu Mini Stadium.
The two-time Premier League champions, currently enduring one of the worst seasons in the club’s history, entered the fixture knowing that only a victory would boost their hopes of escaping relegation. Playing in front of their home supporters, Diamond Stars were expected to secure all three points, but they were left disappointed after failing to break down a disciplined Freetown City side.
Nicknamed the Gem Boys, the Koidu-based club started brightly and created several early chances, but their finishing let them down against a resolute visiting defence. Throughout the 90 minutes, the home crowd rallied behind their team, hoping for a crucial win that never came.
Freetown City FC, however, celebrated a valuable point away from home, thanks largely to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Mamadu Bah. The shot-stopper produced a series of crucial saves to deny Diamond Stars and was deservedly named Man of the Match.
At the final whistle, silence filled the Koidu Mini Stadium as frustrated supporters watched their team’s hopes of Premier League survival suffer another major setback.
Attention now shifts to Wednesday’s crucial home encounter against Freetonian SLIFA, where Diamond Stars will once again be under pressure to secure maximum points in their battle to remain in the top flight.
