Dr. Kabba Assumes Office As New CMO With Focus On Patients And Teamwork

Dr. Mustapha Kabba has officially assumed office as Sierra Leone’s new Chief Medical Officer (CMO), urging health workers and stakeholders to move beyond celebrations and focus on improving patient care and healthcare delivery.

On his first day in office, Dr. Kabba met with his team and colleagues, stressing that patients must remain at the centre of the health sector’s mission. He said patients must be “seen, heard, and cared for with compassion.”

Dr. Kabba expressed appreciation to President Julius Maada Bio, Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby and the Ministry’s leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility. He also recognised doctors, nurses and other health workers across the country, pledging to serve in Sierra Leone’s interest and support the Minister’s vision of transforming healthcare delivery.

He said his priorities would include supporting efforts to improve healthcare services, particularly for women and children, while promoting greater unity and shared accountability across the sector.

Calling for a team-based approach, Dr. Kabba said health workers and stakeholders must work together rather than as individuals, emphasising that achievements should be viewed as collective successes.

He urged stakeholders to take responsibility for their respective roles and focus on delivering results rather than assigning blame, noting that progress in the health sector would depend on collective commitment and accountability.

The new CMO also paid tribute to his predecessor for contributions made during the previous tenure and pledged to build on that work as he continues efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s health sector.

His assumption of office marks the beginning of his tenure as Chief Medical Officer, with his first-day message centred on teamwork, accountability, collective responsibility and putting patients at the heart of healthcare delivery.
