ETU-SL Breaks Ground for Landmark Postgraduate Complex in Panderu Town
The Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone (ETU-SL) has commenced construction of a landmark Postgraduate Complex at its Panderu Town campus, marking a major step in the university’s expansion of postgraduate education and research in the Eastern Region.
The sod-turning ceremony was held on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, diplomatic representatives, traditional leaders, students and community representatives from across the Eastern Province.
The new facility will house the university’s School of Postgraduate Studies and is expected to provide dedicated infrastructure for advanced learning, research and postgraduate administration.
According to University Registrar, Mr. John Juana, the initial funding for the project was secured through the Chinese Embassy in Freetown, following diplomatic facilitation by Alhaji Timothy Musa Kabba, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Speaking on the significance of the project, Dr. Lawrence Sao Babawo, former Dean of Postgraduate Studies and current Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice Principal, said the complex would strengthen the university’s capacity to deliver advanced education and conduct research.
He explained that, upon completion, the modern facility would bring lecture halls and administrative offices for postgraduate studies together under one roof, creating a more conducive environment for students and academic staff.
The project forms part of a wider infrastructure development programme currently underway at ETU-SL, with several construction activities taking place across its campuses. Development works at the nearby Bunumbu Campus are also reportedly approaching completion.
In addition to the postgraduate complex, the university is advancing plans for a state-of-the-art ICT Training Facility and Innovation Hub. The centre is being fully funded by Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh and is expected to strengthen digital skills development and technological innovation at the university.
Professor Mohamed T. Lahai, Vice Chancellor and Principal of ETU-SL, said the proposed ICT centre would position the institution as a leading national hub for digital skills training and innovation.
The ongoing investments reflect ETU-SL’s broader ambition to expand its academic and technical infrastructure while strengthening its contribution to higher education, research, technology and skills development in Sierra Leone.
With the construction of the Postgraduate Complex and planned ICT Innovation Hub, the university is positioning itself to play a greater role in postgraduate education, technical advancement and digital transformation across the country.
