ETU-SL Takes University Beyond Campus with New Community Initiative

The Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone (ETU-SL) has officially launched its “Taking the University to the People” initiative at Kabba Hall on 24 October 2026, as part of activities marking the institution’s fifth anniversary.
The launch marked the culmination of a seven-day celebration featuring various activities, including health walks, exhibitions, and stakeholder engagements.
The initiative seeks to strengthen the university’s relationship with the communities it serves and ensure that its teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement contribute meaningfully to local and national development.
As a public institution established to expand access to higher education and promote technical and professional development, ETU-SL recognises that its success depends not only on academic achievements but also on the active participation and support of communities, institutions, and other stakeholders.
The programme brought together Professor Joe Andrew Dominic (Joe A. D.) Alie, Mohamed Tailu Lahai, the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, representatives of the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE), lecturers, paramount chiefs, students, and other community stakeholders.
Discussions focused on the university’s establishment, achievements, future plans, and the role communities can play in supporting its continued growth.
During the engagement, stakeholders highlighted the availability of land for further infrastructural development across the Eastern Region.
They also noted that the establishment of ETU-SL has expanded access to higher education, reducing the need for students to travel long distances to attend universities elsewhere.
The university also showcased some of its products, innovations, and achievements through an exhibition held as part of the anniversary celebrations.
ETU-SL called on communities and other stakeholders to continue supporting its campuses across the Eastern Region to strengthen the institution’s contribution to education and national development.
