EU Trains 46 Auditors to Boost Public Accountability

The European Union has supported the training of 46 staff members from the Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL) to enhance public-sector auditing quality and strengthen financial accountability across the country.
The six-day intensive program, held at the Country Lodge Hotel under the EU-funded State and Resilience Building Project managed by LINPICO, focused on management letter report writing.
Speaking at the opening, Auditor-General Abdul Aziz highlighted that audit reports serve as vital communication tools for Parliament, government bodies, development partners, and the public. He urged auditors to prioritize quality over quantity, emphasizing that clear and evidence-backed reports are essential for driving reform.
Aziz outlined five core elements required for effective audit findings: criteria, condition, cause, consequence, and actionable corrective steps.
Augustus Cole, EU Team Lead for the LINPICO project, noted that clear reporting ensures identified management weaknesses lead to prompt corrective measures. Meanwhile, lead facilitator Rachel McKechnie stressed the need for objective, context-rich reporting that avoids ambiguous language.
By refining report-writing skills, the training aims to produce more impactful audits, ensuring greater transparency and responsible management of public resources in Sierra Leone.
