Evidence Presented in Court for Jakitay's Murder Trial Two Years Later

Crime: Evidence Presented in Court for Jakitay's Murder Trial Two Years Later

In a spiraling murder trial gripping the Freetown High Court, police have presented crucial evidence, including a knife and electronic devices, as the case against Mohamed Jakitay unfolds.

Jakitay appeared before Justice Adrian Fisher at High Court No. 1 on Siaka Steven Street, facing charges of murder.

The charges stem from the alleged murder of Ibrahim Jakitay on July 28, 2023, in Freetown. When the charge was read, Jakitay did not enter a plea, as the proceedings were a trial and not a preliminary investigation.

The prosecution, led by State Prosecutor Musa Pious Sesay Jr., Esq., presented testimony from Police Sergeant Issa Kamara, attached to the exhibit office at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters. Sergeant Kamara detailed his responsibilities for safeguarding exhibits and ensuring their proper handling in court.

He testified that on September 11, 2023, Inspector D. Mackieu of the Homicide Unit handed over several items, including an empty AirPod earbud, a black-handled butcher knife, and a white mobile phone.

These items were reportedly found with the corpse at the discovery scene. Initially unidentified, the victim's identity was later established through police inquiries.

Sergeant Kamara affirmed that these items have remained in police custody and were produced and tendered as exhibits to form part of the case record. Defense counsel Muctarr Rashid, Esq., cross-examined the witness.

Justice Fisher denied bail for Jakitay, remanding him to the male correctional facility in Freetown. The trial has been adjourned to August 8, 2025.
