Fatima Bio Champions Empathy-Based Leadership at Global Forum Event

First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has called for greater emphasis on soft leadership, stressing that true leadership is defined not only by authority but also by influence, empathy, and the ability to inspire meaningful change.

She made the remarks at the opening of the Global First Partners Academy, where First Partners from around the world gathered to discuss leadership, service, and global impact.

Dr. Bio said the platform provides an important opportunity for shared learning and for strengthening the role of leaders’ spouses in advancing social development.

She emphasized that leadership should be grounded in compassion and influence rather than authority alone, noting that soft power remains a key tool in driving positive change.

As President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), she highlighted the importance of leading by example and building stronger networks among African First Ladies committed to development.

Dr. Bio described soft power as a transformative tool capable of shaping policies, influencing mindsets, and expanding opportunities for women, children, and communities when applied with purpose and integrity.

She expressed appreciation to the organisers of the Global First Partners Academy and partner institutions supporting the initiative, describing it as the beginning of a stronger global network of leaders committed to inclusion and progress.

“The journey has just begun,” she said, adding that she looks forward to the lessons, partnerships, and collective action that will emerge from the platform.
