President Julius Maada Bio has issued a strong appeal for national unity, urging Sierra Leoneans to move beyond ethnic, regional, and religious divisions in favor of a collective identity.

Addressing citizens during the 2026 Presidential Town Hall Meeting in Makeni, President Bio emphasized that his administration remains dedicated to inclusivity and meritocracy. He highlighted that government appointments are made based on professional capability rather than regional or tribal affiliations.

“I believe in regional inclusivity. That's why my Government is made up of all tribes and regions,” President Bio stated. “I go for the best brains, and I don't watch where you are coming from or which tribe you belong to.”

Drawing a parallel to the country’s progress in religious tolerance, the President questioned why similar unity cannot be achieved across tribal and regional lines. He encouraged a shift in discourse, advocating for a “developing message” rather than rhetoric that creates divisions.

Reflecting on the nation’s history, President Bio reminded the audience of the importance of preserving the peace hard-won after the civil war. “Some of us who lived through the war could never imagine returning to that dark chapter,” he remarked. “Peace is our collective choice, and we must protect it.”

The President concluded by calling on both political actors and the general public to reject those who preach division. He took responsibility for the political class, noting that politicians are often the ones who magnify differences among citizens.

Affirming his role as a leader for all, he declared,

“I will never engage in anything that brings division. My commitment is to foster peace and unity.”
