In advance of the upcoming 2026 ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Finance, Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, held a high-level consultative meeting with the ECOWAS Commissioner of Macroeconomics, Dr. Kalilou Sylla, to coordinate regional economic priorities.
The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the Finance Ministry’s George Street offices, focused on strengthening the framework for economic cooperation across West Africa. Dr. Sylla, who is in Freetown to attend the regional summit, praised the government and people of Sierra Leone for their commitment to hosting the event.
The dialogue covered a range of strategic issues central to the bloc's stability, including:
Regional Economic Development: Enhancing infrastructure and digital payment systems to facilitate seamless trade integration among member states.
Macroeconomic Convergence: Reviewing the outcomes of the 13th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Convergence Council held earlier this year in Monrovia, specifically regarding the roadmap for the ECOWAS Single Currency (ECO).
Policy Alignment: Strengthening efforts to synchronize economic policies to boost regional stability.
As part of his role in the upcoming summit, Minister Bangura is slated to present the findings and recommendations from the 67th Meeting of the Committee of Governors of Central Banks of ECOWAS Member States to the Council of Heads of State and Government.
The session was attended by a robust delegation, including Deputy Minister of Finance II Madam Jenneh Jabati, Bank Governor Dr. Ibrahim Stevens, Financial Secretary Matthew Dingie, Chief Economist Alimamy Bangura, ECOWAS Director of Macroeconomic Stability and Multilateral Surveillance Iliysu Bobbo, and Technical Adviser to the Minister of Finance Franklyn Bendu.
The meeting underscores Sierra Leone’s proactive role in shaping regional economic discourse as ECOWAS leaders prepare to address pressing challenges facing the bloc.
