First Lady Fatima Maada Bio has publicly questioned the Sierra Leone People’s Party’s (SLPP) internal rules governing leadership eligibility. Her challenge stems from the revelation that she has paid dues for the Chief Grand Patron category, a status that party executives have previously indicated qualifies members for consideration for the presidential ticket.
During an interview on AYV’s Wake Up Sierra Leone, the First Lady highlighted a perceived inconsistency between her substantial, long-term financial contributions and the party's current classification system. She noted that despite having paid her party dues in full through the year 2030, she has been informed that she does not meet the requirements for the Chief Grand Patron bracket.
“I have paid my party dues in full up to 2030. Yet I have been told I do not fall within the Chief Grand Patron bracket,” she stated, underscoring the apparent discrepancy.
The Chief Grand Patron category is designated for members whose financial commitment is intended to demonstrate a profound and sustained dedication to the party. Party executives have previously confirmed that membership in this bracket confers eligibility for senior party roles, including the presidential nomination. The First Lady’s statement now prompts scrutiny regarding the party's membership classification process and the consistent application of its internal rules.
As a highly visible and active figure within the SLPP for many years, Mrs. Bio’s disclosure draws attention to the mechanism by which the party ranks its members and determines qualifications for leadership positions, particularly for those with extensive financial commitments.
Her comments emerge amid growing public interest in political party governance and transparency, and they are likely to instigate internal deliberation within the SLPP concerning membership classifications and the criteria for leadership eligibility.
