Government Announces Relaunch of Sierratel Under New Private Sector Partnership

The Government of Sierra Leone has announced plans to relaunch Sierratel through a new private sector partnership, in what officials describe as the beginning of a new phase for the country’s telecommunications sector.

The announcement was made during a meeting with Sierratel staff and representatives from the Ministry of Employment. The Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation confirmed that an agreement has been reached to restore and reposition the company under a new operating model.

According to the Minister, the partnership includes an advance payment of USD 2 million to begin settling staff liabilities, which are estimated at approximately USD 6.3 million.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to revive Sierratel’s operations, safeguard national telecommunications infrastructure, and improve service delivery across the country.

Officials say the relaunch is expected to contribute to the development of a more sustainable and competitive telecommunications sector in Sierra Leone.

The move also forms part of government efforts to strengthen key state-owned enterprises and restore the company’s role within the national communications landscape.
