Government Earns Praise for Progress on AfCFTA Rollout

Sierra Leone has received high-level continental recognition for its progress in implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), following key regional meetings in Nigeria where its efforts were highlighted as a model for African economic integration.

The recognition came during a series of high-level engagements attended by Sierra Leone’s delegation, led by the Minister of Trade and Industry, who also serves as Chairperson of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers of Trade, Investment, and Industry.

The delegation participated in the 18th AfCFTA Council of Ministers of Trade Meeting held in Abuja on June 30, followed by the 2nd AfCFTA Digital Trade Forum in Lagos on July 1.

Across both forums, continental leaders and trade experts commended Sierra Leone’s policy direction and progress in domesticating AfCFTA frameworks. The country’s implementation strategy was described as a reference point for other member states working to strengthen regional trade integration.

Officials noted that Sierra Leone’s approach demonstrates growing commitment to unlocking cross-border trade opportunities, improving regulatory alignment, and advancing digital trade systems within the AfCFTA framework.

The recognition is expected to further position Sierra Leone within continental trade discussions as efforts continue to deepen economic cooperation across Africa.
