MBSSE Finalizes 2026 BECE Schedule Following Correction

The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has officially confirmed that the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is scheduled to begin on Monday, 20 July 2026. The exams will conclude on Tuesday, 28 July 2026.

This announcement serves to rectify an earlier communication that had incorrectly stated a start date of 6 July. In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Ministry formally apologized for the error, acknowledging the anxiety and inconvenience the confusion may have caused for students, parents, teachers, and school administrators.

“MBSSE acknowledges the discomfort and anxiety this may have caused to candidates, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders,” the Ministry stated.

They also extended their appreciation to the public for their continued patience and cooperation as they resolved the scheduling matter.

The revised dates align with the final examination timetable issued by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in consultation with the Ministry.

In light of the adjustment, the Ministry has urged all BECE candidates to maintain focus and utilize the additional time for thorough revision. The Ministry emphasized that students should remain calm and prepare adequately for their upcoming assessments.

The Ministry also called upon the broader community—including local authorities, security agencies, the media, and civil society organizations—to support a secure and credible examination process.

“Protecting the integrity of our public examinations is a shared national responsibility,” the statement noted. “Every stakeholder has a role to play in maintaining high standards of transparency, discipline, and fairness.”

School officials have been directed to complete all necessary preparations on time to ensure candidates are fully supported.

The confirmed WAEC timetable has been attached to the Ministry's official statement, and all schools are advised to adhere strictly to this schedule.
