The Government of Sierra Leone has officially handed over the rehabilitation of the Kenema–Zimmi Road to a contractor, marking a significant step toward improving road infrastructure in the eastern region of the country.
The project is being implemented through the Sierra Leone Roads Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Public Assets and the Road Maintenance Fund Administration.
Stretching for about 87 kilometres, the Kenema–Zimmi Road is regarded as a vital route linking communities in Kenema District to Zimmi in Pujehun District. The road further connects key agricultural and trading areas across the south-eastern part of the country.
The route also serves as an important corridor for the movement of goods, farm produce, and passengers between districts, making it essential to economic and social activities in the region.
Government officials noted that the rehabilitation project forms part of broader national efforts to improve transportation infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and enhance regional connectivity. Once completed, the improved road is expected to reduce travel time, facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce to markets, and promote cross-district trade and development.
Authorities also indicated that the project will create employment opportunities for local communities during the construction phase, while contributing to the government’s wider infrastructure development agenda.
Residents and stakeholders in the affected districts have long called for the rehabilitation of the road due to its deteriorating condition, which has frequently caused transportation difficulties and increased travel risks for motorists and commuters.
Government authorities have assured the public that the rehabilitation works will address these longstanding concerns and significantly improve accessibility for communities along the corridor.
The commencement of the project is widely viewed as a major boost to development in the eastern and southern regions of Sierra Leone, particularly for communities that depend on the road for trade, agriculture, and mobility.
