Government Launches First Study Abroad Summit for Students

Sierra Leone has held its first Study Abroad Summit aimed at increasing awareness of international education opportunities and helping students explore pathways to pursue higher education overseas.

The summit, organized by the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education in collaboration with partners including Orange Sierra Leone, was held at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown on Thursday, 9th July 2026, bringing together nearly 1,000 students, education professionals, government officials, and development partners.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh highlighted the need to expand access to higher education, noting that Sierra Leone faces a gap between the number of qualified students and available university spaces.

He revealed that while about 100,000 students qualify annually, universities currently have capacity for only around 30,000 students. He said study opportunities abroad can help address this challenge while exposing young Sierra Leoneans to global knowledge and skills.

Dr. Sengeh encouraged students who benefit from overseas education opportunities to return and contribute to national development. During a fireside conversation with Minister of Technical and Higher Education Hon. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, discussions focused on academic excellence, service, and using education to create positive impact.

The summit emphasized collaboration among government institutions, education providers, private sector partners, and development organizations to expand access to global learning opportunities.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the initiative will help students make informed decisions about their academic futures and contribute to building a skilled workforce for Sierra Leone’s development.
