TRC Recommendations: Government Reviews Progress, Sets Roadmap for Outstanding Issues
Sierra Leone has reviewed progress in implementing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), with stakeholders on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, assessing achievements made so far and agreeing on a roadmap to address outstanding issues, including reparations, institutional reforms, governance and national cohesion.
The review meeting was led by Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay, who said the process must go beyond remembering the country’s painful past and focus on delivering meaningful action for victims while strengthening national institutions.
“More than two decades after the war, we owe victims more than remembrance we owe them action,” Sesay said.
Speaking at the meeting, Sesay said he addressed participants not only in his official capacity as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, but also as a Sierra Leonean whose life was affected by the country’s civil war.
“I belong to the generation whose lives were shaped by our civil war. I was internally displaced, lost loved ones, and witnessed the devastating consequences of conflict,” he said.
He said his personal experiences continue to influence his commitment to justice and reconciliation, stressing the need to ensure that the TRC recommendations are transformed into practical reforms.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that the TRC’s recommendations are translated into meaningful reforms that strengthen our institutions and safeguard our future,” Sesay stated.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established following Sierra Leone’s 11-year civil war to investigate human rights violations, promote healing and recommend measures aimed at preventing a recurrence of conflict.
Its final report, titled Witness to Truth, contained recommendations on reparations, accountability, governance reforms and national reconciliation.
Reflecting on the Commission’s work, Sesay said the country must now move beyond documenting the truth of the past and focus on implementing concrete actions.
“The TRC’s final report was titled Witness to Truth. Our task now is to ensure that its implementation becomes a Witness to Action,” he said.
The review meeting forms part of ongoing national efforts to advance outstanding TRC recommendations and strengthen peace, justice and national cohesion more than two decades after the end of Sierra Leone’s civil war.
