Residents of Freetown will now receive water under a six-zone rationing system introduced by the Guma Valley Water Company (GVWC), aimed at ensuring equitable distribution across the capital.
Speaking at the Government Weekly Press Conference on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at the Miatta Conference Centre, GVWC Managing Director Mariwan Kallon outlined ongoing efforts to improve water supply and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing reliable access for residents.
Kallon explained that the new rationing plan divides the city into six zones, with each zone expected to receive water for approximately eight hours daily. He said the measure is designed to promote fair distribution, reduce reliance on overstretched pipelines, and minimise losses caused by leakages.
He further highlighted the company’s crackdown on illegal water connections, noting increased monitoring and enforcement measures. These include the installation of meters on hydrants to track usage and curb wastage.
The Managing Director also raised concerns over encroachment in Guma’s catchment areas, stressing the need to protect the water source that supplies the capital. He commended government efforts to address the issue through strengthened regulation and enforcement.
GVWC officials urged residents to cooperate by adhering to designated supply schedules, reporting illegal connections or irregularities, and supporting efforts to safeguard water infrastructure.
The rationing plan forms part of broader initiatives aimed at ensuring sustainable, reliable, and efficient water supply for the city’s growing population.
