Khadijah Kamara, a 25-year-old mother, was released from custody on March 10, 2026, after serving eleven months in detention. Ms. Kamara was originally charged with Office Breaking and Larceny in connection with an April 2025 incident at Alfisher Investment Company on Campbell Street, involving the alleged theft of food and drinks valued at SLE 160.
Initially held on remand without legal counsel during Magistrate Court proceedings, Ms. Kamara was committed to the High Court in July 2025. She was subsequently indicted in January 2026 with Intent to Steal, pursuant to Section 27(2) of the Larceny Act 1916.
During her appearance before Justice Bawoh on March 10, Ms. Kamara was represented by AdvocAid counsel and entered a guilty plea. Following a plea in mitigation submitted by her legal team, Justice Bawoh sentenced her to eleven months. Crediting the time already served in pre-trial detention, the Court ordered her immediate release.
AdvocAid reaffirmed its dedication to providing legal representation for women within the justice system, advocating for processes that are fair, proportionate, and attentive to the specific circumstances of vulnerable individuals.
This case underscores critical concerns regarding the duration of pre-trial detention and the necessity of accessible legal aid for women in Sierra Leone's legal system.
