The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) has formally cautioned political leaders and key stakeholders throughout Sierra Leone against the deployment of hate speech. The Commission emphasizes the necessity of restraint in all public communications to mitigate escalating political tensions.
Concerns have been raised regarding reports within social media and public discourse concerning alleged statements by high-ranking political figures. The Commission notes that these allegations are being treated with gravity due to their potential to undermine national stability and peace.
While the ICPNC acknowledges that not all reports can be verified at this juncture, it maintains that any language potentially construed as inciting violence, threatening individuals, or marginalizing citizens based on political affiliation is strictly prohibited and violates the Agreement for National Unity.
“Any discourse—regardless of whether it is intended as humor or political posturing—that may reasonably be interpreted as an incitement to violence or a dehumanization of the citizenry is entirely unacceptable,” the Commission stated.
The Commission further highlighted the recent findings of the Third Joint Assessment Mission of International Moral Guarantors, which called upon all political participants to abstain from hate speech, provocation, and the dissemination of misinformation.
The ICPNC urges political leadership at all levels to demonstrate composure and ensure that their constituencies do not engage in intimidatory or polarizing rhetoric. Additionally, it advises political organizations to implement internal disciplinary protocols where appropriate.
Law enforcement agencies are encouraged to maintain vigilant oversight and provide impartial interventions in instances of credible threats to public safety. Concurrently, the media is urged to perform rigorous fact-checking prior to publication to avoid the amplification of inflammatory content.
The Commission extends an appeal to the citizens of Sierra Leone and religious institutions to reject divisive narratives and prioritize the preservation of peace and national unity.
The ICPNC reaffirms its dedication to monitoring the national climate and facilitating constructive dialogue. It remains steadfast in its mandate to safeguard peace and social cohesion throughout the Republic.
