A driver, Mohamed Conteh, has been remanded in custody after appearing before Magistrate Medisa Massaquio at Pademba Road Court No. 6 in Freetown on a charge of fraudulent conversion.
Conteh is charged under Section 20(1)(iv)(a) of the Larceny Act of 1916.
According to the prosecution, the alleged offence occurred on April 10, 2026, at Goderich Street in the Western Area, where the accused is said to have unlawfully converted property belonging to Ibrahim Gibo Conteh.
The court heard that the item in question is a green and orange Bluetooth speaker valued at 750 Leones, which was reportedly entrusted to the defendant for safekeeping.
Prosecutors allege that instead of returning the speaker, Mohamed Conteh fraudulently converted it to his own use.
In his testimony, the complainant, Ibrahim Gibo Conteh, also a driver, told the court that he handed over the speaker to the accused for safekeeping. He said that when he attempted to retrieve the item the following day, the defendant refused to return it and allegedly walked away on several occasions.
The complainant further stated that he later apprehended the accused and took him to the Eastern Police Station, where statements were obtained from both parties.
During the proceedings, the unrepresented defendant cross-examined the prosecution witness.
Magistrate Massaquio denied bail and ordered that the accused be remanded at the Freetown Male Correctional Facility.
The matter has been adjourned to April 30, 2026, for further hearing.
