IGP Sellu Visits Kailahun, Promises Reconstruction of Burnt Police Barracks

Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu has paid a strategic working visit to Kailahun District, where he assessed the destruction caused during the 21 June 2026 disturbances, which left the Kailahun Police Barracks destroyed, damaged officers’ personal property, and claimed lives.

Accompanied by Regional Police Commander East ACP Joe Kamanda Bongay, the IGP inspected the burnt barracks before addressing police personnel at the Kailahun Police Division Headquarters. He expressed sympathy to affected officers, encouraged them to remain committed to their constitutional duties, and urged them to embrace community policing in line with the Sierra Leone Police Strategic Development Plan (2025–2029).

Mr. Sellu stressed that stronger police-community partnerships are vital for building public trust, improving intelligence gathering, reducing crime, and enhancing service delivery. He also called on commanders to uphold discipline, professionalism, accountability, and effective leadership while warning that his administration would not tolerate police misconduct.

The IGP later met with community stakeholders, union members, and the Local Policing Partnership Board (LPPB), where he expressed disappointment over the destruction of the police barracks, vandalism of state property, and the loss of lives. He assured residents and officers that the Kailahun Police Barracks will be rebuilt, reaffirming the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to restoring normal policing services and improving officers’ welfare.

During the visit, ACP Joe Kamanda Bongay, on

behalf of the IGP and the Executive Management Board, presented three laptop computers to the Local Unit Commanders of Kailahun, Daru, and Koindu to strengthen digital policing, improve record-keeping, information management, reporting, and administrative efficiency.

The visit ended with renewed commitments from the Sierra Leone Police and community stakeholders to work together to preserve peace, rebuild public trust, and enhance security across Kailahun District.
