Andrew Lavallie, Executive Director of the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR), has issued a call for the implementation of robust accountability mechanisms to ensure political leaders are held responsible for failing to deliver on campaign manifesto promises.

Speaking recently on Radio Democracy 98.1 FM, Lavallie addressed the critical intersection of governance, accountability, and public trust in elected leadership. He argued that the current reliance on the electoral process—waiting for the next election to vote out underperforming officials—is an insufficient remedy for broken campaign commitments.

“Failing to deliver on manifesto promises should come with consequences,”

Lavallie stated during the broadcast, emphasizing that accountability must be a continuous process throughout a leader's term rather than a singular event at the ballot box.

According to Lavallie, there is an urgent need for stronger advocacy and institutional reforms to make political promises legally or administratively enforceable within the governance framework. He suggested that such mechanisms would serve as a vital tool to ensure that elected officials remain committed to their development pledges while in office.

Lavallie maintained that broader accountability structures are essential to strengthening democratic governance and improving public trust in state institutions. By creating pathways to hold leaders answerable for their commitments, he argued, citizens can better ensure that the services promised during election campaigns are actually delivered.

The IGR Executive Director concluded by stressing that reform in this area is a prerequisite for a more transparent and responsive political culture, asserting that citizens deserve more than just electoral outcomes when it comes to the fulfillment of national development pledges.
