The Executive Director of the National Sports Authority, Mohamed Alphaka Conteh, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the rehabilitation of the Siaka Stevens National Stadium, describing the project as a national priority for the growth and development of sports in Sierra Leone.
Speaking during the partial handing-over ceremony of the National Stadium, Conteh expressed appreciation to Julius Maada Bio for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Authority. He pledged to work closely with the Ministry of Sports, the NSA Board, and other stakeholders to strengthen sports development nationwide.
Conteh also acknowledged the efforts of former NSA Executive Directors, Dr. Kenneth Brima and Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, for their contributions toward advancing the China-Aid National Stadium Rehabilitation Project since its commencement in February 2022.
According to him, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the NSA and the Ministry of Sports, has met its obligations under the project agreement by facilitating visas for the Chinese technical team, granting duty waivers for imported project materials, ensuring the provision of water and electricity, and coordinating with relevant government institutions to support implementation.
Addressing public concerns over delays in completing the main bowl, Conteh explained that the installation of plastic seats — a mandatory requirement under FIFA and CAF regulations — was not part of the original project agreement. He noted that the procurement process for the seats has been a major factor contributing to the delay.
He further highlighted the occupation of the stadium’s car park and surrounding areas as a significant challenge that could affect approval from FIFA and CAF for the hosting of international matches. He called on all stakeholders to support efforts to reclaim the affected spaces in order to enhance security and ensure compliance with international standards.
Conteh assured the public that the NSA would continue to work closely with the Ministry of Sports to guarantee the proper management and effective utilization of the rehabilitated facilities once the project is fully completed.
The partial handing-over ceremony marks another important milestone in the ongoing rehabilitation of the National Stadium, as Sierra Leone moves closer to restoring one of its most vital sporting facilities for both domestic and international competitions.
