BBC Journalist Umaru Fofana has warned that kush is making a strong comeback in Sierra Leone, cautioning that drug dealers have regained strength if they were ever weakened.
“Kush is back with a bang if it ever went away,” Fofana said in a media interview. He urged the public to stop using the drug, warning that the only way to curb dealers’ influence is to stop buying kush.
Kush remains widely used, particularly among young people, due to its low cost and easy accessibility. Its use has been linked to serious health problems, including addiction and brain damage.
In April 2024, the government declared a national emergency over drug abuse. Since then, efforts have been made to raise awareness, provide treatment for those affected, and enforce laws aimed at reducing the spread of kush.
Despite these measures, the drug continues to be found in many communities, affecting individuals and families. Local leaders and organizations are working to educate the public on the dangers of kush.
Fofana emphasized that refusing to use the drug can help cut off support for dealers and reduce the harm caused by kush across the country.
