A kekeh rider, Foday Sankoh, 32, has been remanded in custody after being caught with counterfeit banknotes valued at 200 Leones, raising concerns over the circulation of fake currency in the city.
Sankoh appeared before Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah at Pademba Road Court No. 1, facing charges of possessing counterfeit banknotes under Section 34(1) of the Bank of Sierra Leone Act 2019, Act No. 5 of 2019.
According to the particulars of the offence, on Tuesday, 10th March 2026, at State Avenue in the Western Area of Freetown, the defendant was found in possession of two hundred Leones (200), consisting of twenty Leones notes all bearing the same serial number, DD668645. Authorities suspected the notes were counterfeit or unlawfully obtained.
When the charges were read and explained to him, Sankoh did not enter a plea, as the matter is currently under preliminary investigation. The defendant appeared in court without legal representation.
Prosecutor Detective Police Constable (DPC) 17649 Kargbo B. presented a bundle of witness statements to the court and is expected to call witnesses to testify against the defendant.
Magistrate Jah ordered that Sankoh be remanded at the Male Correctional Facility in Freetown. The case has been adjourned to 8th April 2026 for further proceedings.
