Kenema Attempts to Revive STEM Education
In a major step toward reversing the decline of science education in the Eastern Region, Pure Science International Academy officially opened its doors in 2026 at 15 Gombulango Street in Kenema. The institution was established to serve as a specialized hub for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
Speaking to reporters, Proprietor Mohammed Mansaray highlighted the urgent need to rebuild local capacity in scientific fields.
"We have seen that in this part of the country, science is slowly going down the drain," Mansaray said. "That is why we decided to establish a school for pure, pure science, because we want to produce plenty of doctors, nurses and engineers from this part of the country."
Mansaray commended President Julius Maada Bio’s Free Quality Education initiative, emphasizing that the academy directly aligns with and supports the national strategy for educational transformation. He assured parents that the school boasts a highly conducive learning environment staffed by trained and qualified educators.
A core pillar of the academy's curriculum is modern digital literacy. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been fully integrated into the syllabus from Class 4 through Senior Secondary School. Led by the school's IT specialist, the coursework combines robust theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on computer training.
Land donor Chief Bockarie Vandi Gbao urged families in Gombulango and neighboring areas to take full advantage of the nearby facility, noting that local access prevents children from missing out on education due to travel distance.
"We came together to make sure the President's aim for children to learn holds water in our own community," Chief Gbao stated. "If you bring your children to this school, you will not regret it. This is pure science — when it comes to WASSCE level, you will not be left behind."
The Principal, Mr. Koroma, emphasized the academy's commitment to maintaining a top-tier learning environment.
Supporting this vision, Senior Staff member Madam Cecilia Isata Kanu reinforced that the institution balances rigorous STEM academics with character development, prioritizing student morals and discipline.
