The Kenema District Council, in collaboration with the Road Maintenance Fund Administration (RMFA), has officially handed over the construction of five culverts and one bridge to Africon Sierra Leone Limited, a project aimed at improving connectivity between Nongowa and Koya Chiefdoms in eastern Sierra Leone.
The symbolic handover ceremony took place in Kortumahun Koya, one of the beneficiary communities, and marked a major milestone for residents of both chiefdoms who have for decades faced challenges accessing reliable road infrastructure.
Funded by the Road Maintenance Fund Administration, the project involves the construction of the culverts and bridge along the Borbu–Kortumahun Koya corridor, a critical route used by residents for commercial activities, access to healthcare services, education, and other essential socio-economic engagements.
Speaking at the event, Mohamed Feika, Engineer at the Kenema District Council, disclosed that the project is expected to be completed within four months, with construction commencing immediately.
In his address, Chairman of the RMFA Board of Directors, Mr. Andrew Ansu Fatorma, announced that a total of One Million, Four Hundred Thousand New Leones (NLe 1,400,000) has been approved for the successful implementation of the project. He noted that the initiative aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to improving infrastructure and expanding opportunities for citizens across the country.
Mr. Fatorma urged community members to take ownership of the project, stressing that its sustainability depends on collective responsibility. He further described the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) as result-oriented and deeply committed to national development.
Also addressing the gathering, Chairperson of the Kenema District Council, Madam Francesa Jambawai, praised President Bio and the people of Kenema District for their continued support of government development initiatives. She reaffirmed the government’s resolve to create more opportunities and improve access to basic services under the President’s leadership.
Madam Jambawai commended councilors and council staff for their dedication to the district’s development and expressed delight over the warm reception accorded to the project team by community members, describing it as evidence of a long-standing desire for improved infrastructure.
Representing the contractor, Africon Sierra Leone Limited assured beneficiaries that the project would be completed within the stipulated timeframe, while calling on the communities to provide maximum support throughout the construction period.
Community stakeholders expressed profound appreciation to the RMFA and the Kenema District Council, describing the project as a long-awaited intervention that will significantly transform livelihoods and economic activities in the area.
The event, attended by several dignitaries including Chairman of the Works Committee of the Kenema District Council, Councillor Victor Mukeh Vandy, Councillor Jaiga, and other stakeholders, ended with the pouring of libation at one of the project sites, symbolizing community acceptance and blessings for the successful execution of the project.
