Kenema Military Receives Cashew Seedling Donation to Boost Afforestation Efforts

The Ministry of Agriculture has officially donated over 600 cashew seedlings to the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) in Kenema, marking a strategic move to bolster local afforestation, environmental conservation, and sustainable agriculture. The donation took place on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

This initiative is part of a broader government effort to increase national tree cover and combat the escalating effects of climate change. 

Beyond environmental restoration, officials highlighted the long-term economic potential of the project, noting that cashew trees offer sustainable income opportunities for both institutions and surrounding communities through nut production.

Military officials expressed gratitude for the contribution, describing the seedlings as a vital step toward creating a greener and more sustainable environment within military premises. 

Under the program, RSLAF personnel will oversee the planting, nurturing, and maintenance of the trees across designated areas in Kenema. Experts anticipate the project will improve local biodiversity, reduce soil erosion, and actively contribute to national climate mitigation targets.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with public and security institutions to expand tree-planting initiatives across the country. 

In a statement following the handover, officials encouraged citizens to view tree planting as a shared responsibility, emphasizing that such collaborations are essential to safeguarding Sierra Leone’s natural resources for future generations.
