In Sierra Leone's higher education sector, Margaret June James has been officially installed as the second Chancellor of the Kono University of Science and Technology (KUST).

The installation ceremony, conducted on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, was led by Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurrie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education after the late Honourable Madam Justice Nyawo Finda Matturi-Jones, the university's inaugural Chancellor.

During the ceremony, Dr. Wurrie commended the new Chancellor's extensive background in public service and university governance—including her prior role as a Court Member of Eastern Technical University. The Minister expressed strong confidence in James's leadership to provide strategic direction and enhance institutional accountability at KUST.

Dr. Wurrie also paid tribute to Justice Matturi-Jones, recognizing her instrumental role during the university's formative years. Highlighting the significance of appointing another female leader to KUST's highest position, Dr. Wurrie called it a major win for women's representation in academia.

Outlining KUST's ongoing development, the Minister revealed that the Government of Sierra Leone has invested $2 million USD into constructing pre-phase facilities on 417 acres donated by local traditional leaders. Progress is also underway on a donor-funded project phase designed to build the main campus.

Dr. Wurrie acknowledged key partners, including traditional leaders, the university's Transition Team, and local community members, re-affirming the Ministry's commitment to supporting KUST as a regional center of excellence in science, technology, and innovation.
