Labour Inspection Uncovers Work Permit and Safety Violations in Factories

The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security has intensified enforcement of labour laws following an inspection exercise along the Masiaka–Waterloo Highway to ensure compliance with the Work Permit Act, 2023 and workplace safety regulations.

Led by the Commissioner of Labour and Employment and senior ministry officials, the operation targeted factories and trading companies, focusing on the employment status of foreign nationals and occupational health and safety standards.

At Brama GQ Trading Limited, officials found that some foreign workers did not possess valid work permits. The company was issued a stern warning and given seven days to regularise the workers’ status, with authorities warning that failure to comply could lead to suspension of operations and other sanctions under the law.

Two slipper manufacturing companies, ROKLYN AND CO and SHOP SLIPPER MANUFACTURING, were also inspected, where safety and compliance irregularities were identified. One factory was issued an Improvement Notice requiring immediate corrective action.

The Commissioner stressed that work permit compliance is mandatory and warned employers that enforcement will continue nationwide, with penalties including fines, sanctions, and possible closure for violators.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing labour regulations, protecting the local workforce, and ensuring all foreign workers are properly documented.
