The Director of the Sierra Leone Law School, Dr. Abu Bakarr Bangura, has strongly denied allegations of corruption and academic malpractice following a formal report submitted against him to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) by the Council of Legal Education.
The Council, which is responsible for overseeing legal education and professional training in the country, reportedly raised concerns bordering on alleged financial mismanagement, lack of transparency in the institution’s budget, and issues relating to academic integrity, including grading systems and admissions processes.
However, in a firm and defiant response, Dr. Bangura dismissed the allegations, describing the report as baseless and politically motivated. He maintained that he has committed no wrongdoing and insisted that the claims are being used as a cover for a broader agenda to remove him from office.
According to Dr. Bangura, the situation is rooted in what he described as resistance to reforms he has been pursuing at the Law School. He stated that his efforts to introduce progressive changes and modernize the institution have been met with opposition from powerful figures within the legal system.
In a further escalation of the matter, Dr. Bangura alleged that the campaign against him is being orchestrated by Chief Justice of Sierra Leone, whom he accused of attempting to undermine his leadership. He went on to claim that there have even been threats to his personal safety, alleging plans aimed at intimidating or silencing him.
The unfolding dispute has drawn significant attention within the legal community, with concerns being raised about its potential impact on the credibility of the country’s legal education system. Observers note that the public exchange of accusations between key figures in the sector could erode confidence in institutions responsible for training future legal professionals.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission is expected to examine the allegations as part of its mandate to investigate corruption-related matters. The situation has also created uncertainty among students and staff of the Law School as developments continue to unfold.
