Lawyers' Society Calls For Unconditional Release of Joseph Kamara

The Lawyers’ Society has called upon the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone to immediately and unconditionally release former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Joseph F. Kamara, urging the bench to reconsider ongoing contempt proceedings against him.
In an official statement released on October 9, 2026, the legal association voiced deep concern over Kamara’s sudden detention following the court's contempt citation. The Society highlighted that Kamara has already tendered a formal public apology, which they argue should serve as a decisive step toward resolving the dispute amicably and upholding the dignity of both the Bench and the Bar.
Emphasizing his extensive contributions to the nation's legal landscape, the organization urged the Judiciary to take into account Kamara’s long-standing public service record.
Describing Kamara as a mentor to hundreds of practitioners nationwide, the group stressed that accepting his apology would demonstrate a measured approach that preserves judicial authority while honoring the essential role of defense counsel in the administration of justice.
Furthermore, the Society cautioned against allowing collateral legal disputes to distract from the broader constitutional questions currently pending before the Supreme Court.
“The interests of justice require that the constitutional issues be determined carefully, dispassionately and without allowing collateral matters to override them,”
the statement read, advocating for a swift resolution that maintains mutual respect between the Judiciary and legal counsel.
