Leema Denies Involvement in November 2023 Prison Break

Mr. Lahai Lawrence Leema, the former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, has unequivocally denied any connection to the November 2023 prison break, asserting that his presence at the correctional facility was strictly to maintain order and safeguard national security.

During a recent press interview, Mr. Leema expressed confidence in his record of public service and dismissed the claims of his involvement as politically motivated efforts to undermine his reputation. He clarified that he attended the scene in his official capacity to help de-escalate a volatile situation amidst rising tensions and the gathering of crowds.

Mr. Leema stated that upon his arrival, security personnel were already working to regain control. His assessment led to the decision to relocate certain high-profile inmates, a measure he insisted was based on safety considerations to prevent further instability, not political influence.

He further took the opportunity to caution political figures against exploiting loyal supporters for personal gain and subsequently abandoning them during crises. Mr. Leema stressed that such conduct poses a risk to both individuals and national stability, emphasizing that genuine leadership demands responsibility, integrity, and accountability.

The former Deputy Minister reiterated his commitment to protecting his standing and contributing to Sierra Leone’s development, despite ongoing public debate and political speculation. He noted that the facts of the November 2023 events have been frequently distorted and urged the public to rely on factual information rather than politically tailored narratives.

Mr. Leema concluded by asserting his clear conscience, maintaining that his role during the prison break was confined to ensuring calm and supporting security efforts, and did not involve influencing operational decisions or contributing to the breach itself.
