Liberian/Sierra Leonean Musician Alonzo Arrested in Major Drug Operation

In a crackdown move on drug trafficking, Liberian musician with Sierra Leonean roots Alonso Yeah, also known as Alonzo Abasi, was apprehended alongside three other suspects by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) on Tuesday. The arrests occurred at the Bo Waterside Port of Entry as part of a major drug bust, stated in a release.

The operation, which took place around 6:30 PM, resulted in the seizure of 844 grams of Methcathinone, a synthetic drug that has recently emerged on the market.

The estimated street value of the confiscated Methcathinone is USD 8,440.00, equivalent to LRD 1,688,000.00.

This incident marks the first recorded attempt to introduce Methcathinone into the Liberian drug market, according to LDEA officials.

The LDEA also identified the other suspects as Eariel Xavises Aweti, 36, and Samuel R. Grey, 28, both Sierra Leonean nationals, along with Matthew Sherman, 25, a resident of Liberia.

The drugs were discovered concealed in the rear door of a blue Nissan Primera during a routine inspection.

Notably, Alonso Yeah is recognized for his music that promotes drug awareness and prevention, adding irony to his arrest.

All suspects have been taken into custody for further investigation and are expected to face prosecution in court.

In light of the recent surge in drug-related issues, the LDEA and concerned Liberian citizens have been actively campaigning against drug use, with participation from various community members, including the family of the Vice President of Liberia.
