President Julius Maada Bio, Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, on Tuesday called for a strengthened and more effective partnership between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
This appeal was made during a courtesy visit by Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, at State House in Freetown.
President Bio highlighted the essential need for close cooperation between the ECOWAS Authority and the Commission, especially in view of current regional challenges. He stressed that strengthening connections with AES countries is crucial for enhancing trade, facilitating the free movement of people and goods, and promoting peace and security throughout West Africa.
"It is imperative that we foster a stronger relationship between ECOWAS and the AES nations and leverage this partnership for the advancement of our Community,” President Bio stated.
He also reaffirmed his steadfast support for democratic transitions and electoral processes within the subregion.
President Bio further suggested convening a Special Summit to collectively consider the region’s development path and establish a shared vision for the future, particularly as ECOWAS celebrates over fifty years of regional cooperation.
Dr. Touray provided President Bio with a detailed update on the Community's status, acknowledging the complex political and economic challenges facing the region as the Chairman takes on leadership. He committed the Commission to working closely with President Bio to enhance regional stability and unity.
