A businessman, Alfred Kanu, has been sentenced to twelve months in prison for stealing a Samsung Galaxy A5 mobile phone along with other items, following a plea of guilty at Pademba Road Court No. 2.
The case, heard before Magistrate John Manso Fornah, stems from an incident on Sunday, 26 October 2025, at No. 58 Mount Aureol, Terrace, Freetown, where Kanu was accused of stealing several valuables belonging to Ibrahim Sesay.
The stolen items included a sky blue Samsung Galaxy A5 Android phone valued at 3,000 leones, a bunch of silver keys worth 1,500 leones, a gold watch valued at 2,000 leones, a black cross bag worth 100 leones, and 655 leones in cash, bringing the total value to 7,255 leones.
Upon being informed of the charges, Kanu pleaded guilty. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sorie Conteh, leading the prosecution, presented Kanu’s voluntary caution statement as evidence, noting that he is a first-time offender.
Although unrepresented by legal counsel, Kanu pleaded with the court for leniency, urging the magistrate to temper justice with mercy.
After reviewing the evidence and the defendant’s plea, Magistrate Fornah sentenced Kanu to twelve months’ imprisonment. The magistrate further noted that the sentence could be avoided if Kanu restores the stolen items to the complainant.
The court also ordered that the exhibits, currently in police custody, be returned to Ibrahim Sesay.
