Mandatory Teacher Licensure Exams Commence to Elevate Education Standards

Sierra Leone has officially commenced its first nationwide Teacher Licensure Examination, marking a pivotal shift in the country's efforts to regulate and professionalize the teaching sector. The examinations, which began on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, serve as the first major test of the mandatory certification requirements established under the Basic and Senior Secondary Education Act, 2023.

Administered by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), the assessment is designed to evaluate the professional competence of educators, ensuring that all teachers meet the rigorous standards necessary to practice in the profession. The initiative is a direct implementation of Section 58(1) of the 2023 Education Act, which mandates official certification and licensure for all teachers operating within the country.

"This licensure process is a crucial step toward improving the quality of teaching and strengthening our overall education system," noted education stakeholders, who have largely welcomed the development.

The TSC stated that the new framework is intended to create a standardized assessment system that promotes accountability, encourages continuous professional development, and ultimately enhances classroom delivery. By establishing these formal certification requirements, the government aims to ensure that every student is taught by an educator who meets established professional benchmarks.

As the first phase of this nationwide rollout concludes, the move signals a long-term commitment to transforming Sierra Leone’s education landscape through formal regulation and higher professional standards.
