Mayor Aki-Sawyerr Launches New Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund Cohort

Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has launched the third cohort of the Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund 2.0, calling on young people to lead locally driven initiatives aimed at tackling the growing impacts of climate change.

The initiative was launched in Freetown as part of activities marking International Youth Day and is designed to empower young people across the municipality with resources and opportunities to develop practical solutions to climate-related challenges in their communities.

The fund is being implemented through a strategic partnership between the Freetown City Council (FCC), Bloomberg Philanthropies and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).

Through seed funding and mentorship, the programme aims to support young innovators in transforming grassroots environmental ideas into practical and sustainable projects that can deliver lasting benefits to communities.

The initiative comes as climate change continues to pose significant challenges to coastal cities such as Freetown, with communities increasingly exposed to flooding, coastal erosion and extreme heat.

The Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund 2.0 seeks to harness the creativity and energy of young people to protect local ecosystems, strengthen community resilience and improve wellbeing across the municipality.

Young people in Freetown have been encouraged to submit innovative project proposals that can contribute to building a greener, more resilient and sustainable future for the city.
