President Bio Orders Emergency Parliament Sitting

President Julius Maada Bio has recalled Parliament for an emergency sitting on Thursday, 20 August 2026, to consider the approval of presidential nominees.

The Office of the Clerk of Parliament announced the recall in a public notice dated Thursday, 13 August 2026, stating that the sitting will commence at 10:00 a.m. in the Chamber of Parliament at Parliament Building, Tower Hill, Freetown.

The emergency sitting follows the last adjournment of Parliament and has been convened pursuant to Section 86(1) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, which provides that the President may summon a meeting of Parliament at any time.

The Clerk of Parliament has accordingly called on all Members of Parliament to attend the sitting and urged them to be present on time.

According to the notice, the sitting will focus specifically on matters relating to the approval of presidential nominees.

The nominees have also been advised to complete the usual parliamentary vetting process and make themselves available for consideration and approval on the scheduled date.

The parliamentary recall forms part of the constitutional process governing the appointment of presidential nominees, who require parliamentary approval before formally taking up their respective appointments.

The Clerk’s Office has further requested that the announcement be publicised immediately to ensure that Members of Parliament and the general public are adequately informed of the emergency sitting.

Parliament is expected to resume proceedings at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, 20 August, with the approval of the presidential nominees forming the main item of business.
