Mayor Aki-Sawyerr Inspects Restoration Works at East End Police Clock Tower

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has inspected ongoing conservation and restoration works at the East End Police Clock Tower, one of Freetown’s notable heritage landmarks.

According to a statement shared by the Mayor, the visit took place on Monday afternoon alongside Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk, as city authorities continue efforts to preserve the historical significance of the structure while restoring its original features.

The project is funded by the Commonwealth Heritage Foundation and implemented by West Africa Heritage Consultants, with a focus on both conservation and skills development.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr noted that the initiative is also providing practical training opportunities for a 12-member local team comprising engineers, stonemasons and carpenters, helping to build local capacity in heritage restoration.

The works are being carried out under the supervision of UK-based stonemason and conservationist David Lamb, who is leading efforts to restore the tower’s original laterite stonework.

The Mayor further highlighted plans to replace the original clock mechanism, a move expected to restore one of the landmark’s most defining features.

The restoration forms part of broader efforts by the Freetown City Council to protect historical sites across the city, including similar works at the Old Fourah Bay College building.

City authorities say the project marks a significant step toward preserving Freetown’s cultural heritage while equipping local professionals with specialised restoration skills.
