The North-East Region Football Association (NERFA), as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening football governance, on Sunday, 3 May 2026, conducted a one-day intensive training on Safety and Security at its Regional Secretariat along 6 Azzolini Highway in Makeni.
The programme brought together safety and security officers from Division One male teams, Premier League male and female teams, as well as football administrators from Falaba, Tonkolili, Koinadugu, and Bombali districts.
The training was facilitated by Alhaji Mohamed Bowen Freeman, a Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) certified CAF Safety and Security Officer, who underscored the importance of safety and security in modern football administration.
He stressed that the credibility of football competitions depends not only on the quality of play on the pitch but also on the assurance that players, officials, and supporters are adequately protected.
Mr. Freeman expressed hope that participants would apply the knowledge gained to improve matchday coordination, enforce CAF safety protocols, and serve as role models within their respective clubs and districts.
In his opening remarks, NERFA Secretary General Sheku Bilo Conteh emphasized the need for participants to translate the training lessons into practical actions that would strengthen matchday operations across the region.
He commended the facilitator for his expertise and commitment, noting that the programme was designed to equip officers and administrators with essential tools to uphold safety standards and ensure smooth football activities.
Delivering the keynote address, Acting Chairman of NERFA, Abdul Pascal Gbla, described the training as a major step in raising the standard of football management in the North-East region.
He urged participants to demonstrate professionalism and accountability in implementing safety measures, adding that this would enhance the credibility of competitions across all levels.
Mr. Gbla also praised the leadership of SLFA President Babadi Kamara for what he described as a transformative agenda that has ensured the nationwide rollout of CAF-mandated trainings, with regional associations entrusted to implement them effectively.
The programme concluded with the certification of 15 participants, marking a significant milestone in NERFA’s drive to professionalize football governance.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the capacity of safety and security officers and improve the overall matchday environment, aligning regional football operations with international standards.
