The Global Mercy, the hospital vessel operated by the international humanitarian organization Mercy Ships, has successfully concluded its three-year medical deployment in Sierra Leone. Docked at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown, the mission represented a significant collaborative effort between Mercy Ships and the Government of Sierra Leone to enhance surgical accessibility and local medical infrastructure.
Between 2023 and 2026, the mission achieved substantial healthcare milestones, providing critical services and professional development:
Surgical Interventions: Over 5,000 life-changing surgical operations were performed.
Dental Care: More than 17,000 dental procedures were successfully administered.
Capacity Building: Training programs were delivered to over 590 healthcare professionals, equipping local practitioners with advanced clinical skills.
The partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone has been pivotal in strengthening the nation’s surgical and healthcare systems. Although the Global Mercy has transitioned to its next mission, Mercy Ships remains committed to Sierra Leone.
The organization will maintain an active presence through in-country teams, ensuring the continuity of training and capacity-building initiatives designed to support the long-term development of the country's medical infrastructure.
This departure marks the conclusion of a successful phase in the ongoing cooperation between Mercy Ships and the state, underscoring a sustained commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for underserved communities in the region.
