Minister Swaray Deepens Strategic Bilateral Ties at UNGA81
On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, convened a bilateral meeting with his Libyan counterpart at Libya House to deepen diplomatic cooperation and align priorities on key continental issues.
The high-level talks focused heavily on inclusive peacebuilding, climate change resilience, post-conflict recovery, and the advancement of shared African priorities.
Drawing from national experience, Minister Swaray highlighted Sierra Leone’s successful inclusion of civil society and key stakeholders in its post-conflict reconciliation and recovery efforts, offering key insights to support Libya’s ongoing national recovery.
A central point of discussion was Sierra Leone’s endorsement of Professor Dr. Charles Chernor Jalloh for election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the 2027–2036 term. Minister Swaray welcomed Libya’s explicit support for Dr. Jalloh’s candidature, emphasizing the significance of unified African backing for international judicial representation.
The ministers further reviewed preparations for the upcoming African Union Committee of Ten (C-10) meeting, which Sierra Leone is slated to host to advance the Common African Position on UN Security Council reform.
Both delegations reaffirmed their commitment to African solidarity and pledged continued collaboration across international forums.
