Missing Woman Found Dead After Alleged Crocodile Attack in Lowoma

A 20-year-old woman, Mansah Momoh, has been found dead after she went missing during a visit to the Huwa River in Lowoma Town, Tongo Division, in what police believe was a suspected crocodile attack.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 1st August 2026, when Mansah, a resident of Tongo Field, accompanied her friend Hawa Foday to the Huwa River area to wash clothes.

According to a police report, shortly after arriving at the river at about 1:00 pm, Mansah informed Hawa that she was going a short distance away to defecate. A few minutes later, Hawa reportedly heard her friend scream, “Oh my mother,” causing her to become alarmed.

The report stated that Hawa immediately called out Mansah’s name several times but received no response. Suspecting that her friend may have encountered danger, she returned to Lowoma Town and reported the matter to local authorities, including the Speaker of Lower Town, Chief Amara Porga.

Following the report, the Officer Commanding (O/C) of Lowoma Police Post, PC Lahai Ensah, alerted the Local Unit Commander (LUC) of Tongo Division, CSP Franklyn A. B. Bawoh, and other relevant authorities.

A search team comprising police officers, local authorities, including the Section Chief of Sei Section, Chief Balima Samba, and community members immediately visited the scene. Despite extensive efforts, the team could not locate Mansah on the first day of the search.

The search operation continued on Sunday, 2nd August 2026, involving divers, police personnel, local authorities, and community youths. While divers searched the Huwa River, other members of the team combed surrounding bushes and nearby areas.

After several hours of searching, a crocodile was reportedly spotted inside an abandoned diamond mining pit close to the river. The upper part of Mansah’s body, from her head down to her stomach, was discovered inside the pit.

Police reported that the remaining parts of her body were missing and were believed to have been eaten by the crocodile. The animal later moved away from the area and disappeared into the river.

The recovered remains were taken to Lowoma Police Post, where officers followed required procedures. Medical personnel examined the remains and confirmed that there were no signs of foul play.

The remains were later handed over to Mansah’s relatives, who transported them in an empty rice bag to Tongo Field for burial.

Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
