Police Intervene to Prevent Gold Lion Mining Community Boundary Dispute Escalation

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), through the Motema Division, has intervened to prevent a potential security threat arising from a boundary dispute between Gold Lion Mining Company and the Kumao Community.

The intervention followed intelligence received on Monday, 3rd August 2026, from the Officer Commanding Kumao Police Post, Inspector Mohamed Joe Kanu, regarding concerns over unclear boundary demarcation between the mining company and the host community.

Acting swiftly, the Motema Division deployed an intervention team led by Support Officer ASP David Ojuku Kamara, with support from Operations Officer Inspector Abubakarr Kamara, to engage stakeholders and prevent the matter from escalating into conflict.

During the engagement, the police team held separate discussions with representatives of Gold Lion Mining Company, community leaders, and other key stakeholders to understand the concerns of both sides and facilitate dialogue towards a peaceful resolution.

ASP Kamara stressed the importance of maintaining peace, respecting the rule of law, and strengthening cooperation between the company and the Kumao Community while the matter awaits further attention from the relevant authorities.

Representing the Senior Town Chief and the Kumao Community, Chief Kondeh commended the Sierra Leone Police for its timely intervention and proactive approach in averting a possible escalation of the dispute. He assured the police team that the outcome of the engagement would be communicated to the appropriate authorities for further action.

The Sierra Leone Police reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, enhancing community relations, and ensuring the safety and security of residents within the Motema Division.
