Mixed Political Reactions to Former President Koroma's Return
Former President Ernest Bai Koroma returned to Sierra Leone on September 6, 2026, following more than two years in Nigeria. His return came after criminal proceedings against him were discontinued in July, clearing the path for his arrival back in the country.
The return has generated mixed reactions across the grassroots, according to Moses Mambu, National Publicity Secretary for the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP).
Speaking to Sarah Kallay Blog, Mambu noted that public sentiment remains divided over the former leader's presence in active national affairs.
Mambu highlighted potential political implications within Koroma's party, the All People's Congress (APC), suggesting that supporters believe Koroma's backing could strongly influence who becomes the party's 2028 presidential flagbearer.
Reflecting on historical parallels, Mambu referenced former Revolutionary United Front (RUF) leader Foday Sankoh, who was granted a vice-presidential rank position during peace efforts.
"We're hoping that Former President Ernest Bai Koroma will not be like that as he has promised too," Mambu stated, emphasizing the importance of honoring commitments to national stability.
Mambu credited President Julius Maada Bio with facilitating Koroma's return as a gesture toward peace and national cohesion, noting that Bio chose to move forward to promote unity.
Upon his arrival, Koroma called for unity and reconciliation, expressing his readiness to help bring Sierra Leoneans together.

Encouraging the public to trust the party leadership and maintain confidence in the nation's stability.
