The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED) has announced the immediate suspension of seven non-governmental organizations (NGOs) following a sector-wide review that identified significant failures in meeting national operating standards.
According to a ministry press release issued on July 6, 2026, the decision stems from a comprehensive evaluation of the NGO landscape, which revealed that several entities were not adhering to the mandatory policy framework.
A primary concern cited by MoPED was the failure of the affected organizations to maintain a verifiable and identifiable office within Sierra Leone. The Ministry noted that certain organizations had been operating below the requisite standards established by the national policy framework, necessitating swift administrative action.
The suspended entities include the Paida Foundation, Activate Hope Sierra Leone, the Women’s Association for National Development, Stichting Wango Sierra Leone, Fama Women’s Programme, Hakeen and Hakeema Charity Organisation, and the Assembly of God Development Agency. All seven organizations have been ordered to cease operations effectively immediately.
Officials explained that the enforcement action is part of a broader effort to bolster accountability, transparency, and regulatory compliance within the sector. The Ministry emphasized that as stewards of public trust and resources, NGOs are required to follow prescribed guidelines to ensure their missions are fulfilled effectively and that resources are managed judiciously.
MoPED further clarified that the suspensions are not intended to diminish the development contributions made by the NGO community. Instead, the Ministry characterized the move as a proactive measure designed to strengthen the integrity of the sector and build greater public confidence.
The government has urged all remaining NGOs in the country to review their operations and ensure strict alignment with established regulations to maintain the sector’s overall credibility.
