MTA Announces Temporary Opening of Corridors to Alleviate Freetown Traffic

The Ministry of Transport and Aviation has authorized the temporary opening of the East and West main transportation corridors to mitigate traffic congestion throughout the city. This decision is necessitated by the current insufficient number of Waka Fine Buses to adequately meet the increasing public transportation demands of Freetown's growing population.

This new operational arrangement will be implemented starting Wednesday, November 5th, 2025. Under this temporary measure, all commercial vehicles, including buses, Poda Podas (minibuses), and tricycles (Kekehs), will be permitted to utilize the East and West corridors for the full duration of the operating day.

It is important to note that commercial motorcycles will remain prohibited within the Central Business District (CBD). Furthermore, designated Waka Fine bus stops will continue to be reserved exclusively for Waka Fine bus operations.

The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), in collaboration with key transport sector stakeholders, will conduct comprehensive awareness campaigns at transport parks to ensure all drivers and commuters are informed about the relevant traffic rules and regulations.

Authorities state that this temporary intervention is designed to significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks, minimize travel delays, and enhance the overall ease of transportation for both residents and commercial enterprises across the capital.
