In adherence to Section 14(1) of the law, which mandates the right of every person with a disability to free tertiary education in accredited institutions within Sierra Leone, the National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPD) successfully executed a verification and validation exercise for students with disabilities at the Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone (ETU-SL) on Saturday, March 7th, 2026. This initiative is a strategic effort to facilitate access to educational scholarship opportunities provided by the Government of Sierra Leone.

The verification and validation process was held at the OTC Center in Kenema, Eastern Sierra Leone, convening university students with disabilities seeking financial support to continue their academic pursuits.

The exercise was spearheaded by the National Commissioner of the Commission, Brima Abdulai Sheriff, who oversaw the verification and validation to ensure the accurate identification and documentation of eligible students for the scholarship program.

Commissioner Sheriff underscored that this initiative is integral to the ongoing commitment to foster inclusive education and enable persons with disabilities to access higher education opportunities.

During the proceedings, James Golia, the President of Students with Disabilities at ETU-SL, expressed his appreciation for the Commission's proactive stance, characterizing the process as a crucial step toward empowering students with disabilities through education.

This exercise is expected to qualify deserving students to benefit from educational scholarships designed to enhance access to tertiary education for persons with disabilities nationwide.

The Commission remains dedicated to collaborating with educational institutions and stakeholders to ensure that persons with disabilities are afforded equal opportunities for academic and professional advancement.
